Guests
Tom Carnes welcomed Guest Speaker Carolyn Colley and Howard Kasonoff of Frost Bank, the guest of Larry Anthis.
Dr. Victor Sylvia introduced Carolyn Colley, Hard of Hearing Specialist. Carolyn holds a BA in Anthropology. While attending college she co-founded Deaf Alliance, a support and advocacy group for Hard of Hearing students at Texas State University. She has been active in an organization called Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA). In the HLAA she held many leadership positions and advocated for the rights of people with hearing loss. Miss Colley has bilateral hearing loss and has worn hearing aids for most of her life. She currently works with Communication Services for the Deaf, which is funded by the Department of Assistant Rehabilitation Services (DARS).
Carolyn pointed out that 50% of all newborns fail their first hearing test. Our body's auditory neurological network is not fully developed until age 15. She also stated that the use of IPODS might cause deafness. Some of the organizations providing help to the Hard of Hearing are Program for Amplification for Children of Texas (PACT), Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP), Easter Seals, Jeannez kids, and the Sertoma Club.
Carolyn closed with a wonderful explanation or saying for all of us who may be a little hard of hearing due to our age, "You've lost your consonants, not your mind".
Carolyn also invited The World's Greatest Club and any interested individuals to attend a workshop this coming Saturday, July 29, 2006. Details as follows:
